Embracing Vulnerability:Turning Failure into a Pathway to Success
4 min read

Vulnerability is often misunderstood as a weakness. However, high performers know that vulnerability is not about fragility; it's about courage. It’s about being open, admitting when something didn’t go as planned, and using that information to get stronger, smarter, faster, and more effective. This mindset of embracing vulnerability is being celebrated by Samsung’s Openness Medal initiative, which encourages Generation Z and athletes to share their failures openly and without shame.
Aarushi Pant (opens in a new tab), a student from Tampa's Strawberry Crest, earned the Openness Medal at the Olympics in Paris for her remarkable innovation and resilience. Last year Aarushi started work on the "Human Health Band", a device she developed with fellow students to monitor overheating in athletes. Despite challenges, Aarushi's openness to failure and perseverance in trying new solutions led to her receiving this recognition.
The Concept Behind the Samsung Openness Medal
The Samsung Openness Medal represents a bold cultural shift. It encourages young people and athletes to embrace their past failures not as setbacks, but as fuel for growth and resilience. Much like Navy SEALs, who thrive on learning from mistakes to hone their capabilities, this campaign focuses on celebrating vulnerability as a path to strength. The ability to say, “This didn’t work, but here’s what I learned,” is what drives both personal and professional development.
Samsung’s campaign highlights the idea that true strength comes from being open about our challenges and failures. In this context, vulnerability is seen as an act of courage, enabling individuals to bounce back stronger and more capable.
The Power of Taking Risks and Failing Forward
One of the most powerful lessons in elite performance—whether in education, business, or the military—is that failure is not an endpoint; it's a stepping stone. In the words of Thomas Edison, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” This quote perfectly encapsulates the idea that failure is an integral part of progress.
Taking risks is essential for growth. However, with every risk comes the possibility of failure. The Samsung Openness Medal reframes and celebrates "failure" not as a loss but as an opportunity for learning. Students need to realize that "not getting it right" becomes the way to sharpen skills, test limits, and grow stronger. By encouraging openness about these "failures", Samsung’s campaign is helping to remove the stigma surrounding missteps and showing that vulnerability is, in fact, a powerful asset.
Lessons for Educators and Students: Building Resilience Through Vulnerability
The concept of vulnerability is centered on trust, resilience, and continuous improvement. This same mindset can be brought into the educational environment, where both educators and students benefit from the freedom to fail without fear.
- For Students: Students can learn that vulnerability is not a sign of weakness but of strength. Being willing to try, fail, and learn from those experiences is critical for personal development. By embracing failure, students open themselves up to growth and new possibilities. Vulnerability fosters resilience, preparing students to face future challenges with confidence.
- For Educators: Educators can take a lesson from this campaign by fostering a classroom environment that encourages risk-taking and open discussion of failures. Just as SEAL teams debrief after missions to discuss what went wrong and how to improve, teachers can create opportunities for students to reflect on their mistakes and use those lessons as springboards for success. Educators can help students see vulnerability as essential to learning and personal growth.
Embracing Vulnerability to Fuel Growth
The Samsung Openness Medal and the Navy SEALs’ approach to vulnerability share a common thread: both celebrate the strength that comes from openness about failure. By recognizing failure as a natural part of growth, both individuals and teams can push their boundaries, build resilience, and ultimately succeed.
Whether in the classroom or in life, vulnerability is not about admitting defeat. It’s about having the courage to learn, to grow, and to come back stronger. Every failure is simply a discovery of one way that won’t work—bringing us one step closer to the way that will. We empower ourselves and our students to turn every setback into a powerful learning experience by fostering a culture of openness, risk-taking, and resilience.
As we embrace vulnerability in our journeys, let’s remember that failure is not the end. It’s just the beginning of something even greater.
